Sandra studied at the University of Edinburgh where she gained an honours degree and thereafter the Diploma in Legal Practice.

She progressed from trainee to assistant to partner in a well established Edinburgh law firm before co-founding Hughes Walker with Duncan Hughes in 1997. Rick Mill joined them shortly thereafter to develop the civil side of the business. The firm now has 6 lawyers dealing with all aspects of court work.

She is a member of the Law Society of Scotland and the Edinburgh Bar Association.

Sandra has been a regular practitioner in Edinburgh Sheriff Court since 1986 and has conducted a wide range of summary and sheriff and jury trials in all areas of criminal law including road traffic, theft, housebreaking, breach of the peace, statutory offences, sexual offences, extortion and many more.

In 2004 she qualified as a criminal solicitor advocate and has since continued to develop and expand her skills and expertise in the High Court dealing with a wide variety of cases including assault and robbery, supply of drugs, willful fireraising, attempted murder and rape.

She has also appeared before the Parole Board in relation to Parole Hearings and Extended Sentence and Life Sentence Prisoner Tribunals.

She has particular experience in dealing with children involved in the criminal justice system. In 2005 she was appointed as one of a handful of Legal Representatives to children appearing before the Children's Panel. She has represented children at children's hearings, children's referral proofs and in relation to criminal proceedings before the court.
